Christ Our Focus

We declare that Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God as revealed in the Bible, the written Word of God, is the only Savior and Lord. He is the center of our shared experience of true biblical unity.

Our Evangelical Core

We affirm our commitment to the core truths of the Bible which we share with other evangelical believers in Jesus Christ.

See full statement here.

Our Grace Brethren Identity

We hold to the doctrines and practices shared by those in the Grace Brethren movement in America and the Charis Movement world-wide. This is our commitment to Biblical truth, Biblical relationships, and Biblical mission.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make fully-developing disciples of Jesus Christ, who ...

...passionately pursue Christ,

...desire life change,

...serve others effectively, and

...seek those who need Christ.

Our Strategy

Our four-step strategy to make disciples is

...making relationships with non-believers,

...worshiping together on Sunday mornings,

...serving others in church and community, and

...growing in obedience in small groups and Sunday School

Get To Know Us

You'll likely hear our preaching pastors Sunday morning, but here is a little about us in the meantime.

  • Dan Thornton

Dan joined Maranatha as Executive Pastor in 2010. He comes to Hagerstown from Soldotna, Alaska, where he served at the Peninsula Grace Brethren Church for twenty years. In addition to preaching and teaching, Dan enjoys Bible study, playing trombone, and directing music groups. He has been married to Susan since 1980 and they have four adult children and five grandchildren. In his spare time, Dan enjoys backpacking the Appalachian Trail.

  • Ron Shank

Ron began his ministry at Maranatha in 1985 as the full-time Youth Pastor, later serving as Associate Pastor.  He served in the church for 23 years.  He then became the Director of Pastoral Care at Brook Lane Health Services in Hagerstown.  He continues to serve at Maranatha as one of the Preaching Pastors.  He and his wife Nancy have been married for 33 years and have two grown children Matthew and Bethany.  In his spare time he enjoys singing, gardening, and snow!  He currently serves on the Board of CE National, which is one of the ministries of the Grace Brethren Fellowship.

  • John Miller

John and Melissa Miller are full-time missionaries with Churches in Mission. Prior to that, John was the founding pastor of Faith Christian Fellowship in Williamsport. They assisted Maranatha for a couple years during the search for an Executive Pastor. Ever since, they come and share their hearts for the Lord when they are available. John is part of the Preaching Team.

The following men generously give of their time to serve Maranatha as elders: Eric Barger, Joe Hartt, Dave Pryor, Jeff Reed, Russ Robinson, Dan Thornton.

National Outreach

We have partnered with the following ministries to reach out to various groups in our nation.

Mission Encounters

We encourage every member of Maranatha to experience at least one cross-cultural mission trip. These adventures open up our eyes to what God is doing in the world. We have partnered with John and Melissa Miller of Churches in Missions who facilitate these mission trips.
